Connect an AI agent to EKX
Connect Claude Code, Codex, or another MCP-capable agent to EKX so it can build single-line diagrams and import protection devices and their trip curves into your private catalogue. The agent signs in to EKX through your browser; you never give it an API key.
Prerequisites
- An EKX account and a workspace.
- For catalogue imports: the Owner or Admin role in that workspace and a paid plan.
- For single-line imports: permission to create projects in that workspace.
- An agent that supports remote MCP servers over HTTP with OAuth sign-in.
The EKX MCP server is https://joinekx.com/mcp.
Connect Claude Code
Install the EKX plugin. It adds the connection and the EKX import skills, which tell the agent how to run each workflow:
claude plugin marketplace add joinekx/ekx
claude plugin install ekx@ekxTo add only the connection, without the skills:
claude mcp add --transport http ekx https://joinekx.com/mcpStart a new session and run /mcp, or ask for an EKX task. Claude Code opens the EKX sign-in page in your browser.
Connect Codex
Add the connection, then sign in:
codex mcp add ekx --url https://joinekx.com/mcp
codex mcp login ekxThe EKX skills are published in the plugins/ekx directory of the EKX repository. Install that plugin through your Codex plugin marketplace to load them. When Codex asks to allow network access for a command, approve it for PDF uploads to EKX.
Connect other MCP clients
Add a remote MCP server with the URL https://joinekx.com/mcp and the Streamable HTTP transport. This works for clients such as Cursor, and for Grok or other agents that support remote MCP servers with OAuth. EKX supports:
- OAuth sign-in with automatic client registration and PKCE. The client discovers the settings from
https://joinekx.com/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource.
- Return addresses on HTTPS, on your own computer (
http://127.0.0.1orhttp://localhost), or an
application link such as cursor://.
Without the plugin, the agent does not have the EKX import skills. Point it to Import catalogue devices with an agent or Import a single-line diagram with an agent before it starts.
Sign in and approve the connection
- Start an EKX task in your agent. It opens the EKX sign-in page in your browser.
- Sign in to EKX if you are not already signed in.
- Review the connection page:
- The application name comes from the application itself. EKX has not verified it.
- The page shows where EKX returns you after approval. Connect only if you started the request
from an agent you trust.
- The permission list shows what the agent can do.
- If you belong to more than one workspace, choose the workspace for this connection. Everything
the agent reads or creates belongs to that workspace.
- Click Connect EKX. Your browser returns to the agent.
> Note: The page warns when catalogue import cannot work in the chosen workspace, because the > workspace has no paid plan or your role is not Owner or Admin. You can still connect for > single-line imports.
To change the workspace or restore a missing permission, sign in again from the agent. In Claude Code, run /mcp and choose to re-authenticate EKX; in Codex, run codex mcp login ekx. Each sign-in requests every EKX permission, so reconnecting never removes project access.
Permissions
| Permission | Allows the agent to |
|---|---|
projects:read | Read projects and single-line import status. |
projects:write | Create projects from single-line proposals. |
catalog:read | Read your catalogue imports and curve-review images, check ETAP exports, and read your cable library. |
catalog:write | Create, process, revise, and cancel catalogue imports, and change your organization's cable series. |
The agent never changes a project during a catalogue import, and it cannot run studies through this connection.
Upload PDFs
For a PDF catalogue import, the agent uploads each file to a short-lived EKX link with an HTTP PUT command such as curl. The agent needs a shell with network access:
- In Codex, approve network access when asked.
- On Windows, the agent must run
curl.exe. The PowerShellcurlcommand sends a different request.
Each import takes up to three PDFs: 90 MiB per file, 270 MiB in total, and 500 pages per PDF.
If your agent cannot run networked commands, email the PDFs to [email protected] instead. EKX makes the import for you and replies when the record is in your catalogue.
Approve curves
The agent shows you each extracted curve overlay beside the manufacturer page and asks for your approval before it saves a curve. EKX saves nothing to your catalogue until every blocking question is answered.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| The agent says to reconnect EKX. | Sign in again from the agent. The connection is missing a permission. |
PAID_PLAN_REQUIRED | Upgrade the workspace, or reconnect and choose a workspace with a paid plan. |
NOT_FOUND on every catalogue call | Your role in the connected workspace is not Owner or Admin. |
RATE_LIMITED | Wait the stated number of seconds; the agent then retries the same request. |
An upload fails with UPLOAD_EXPIRED | The agent requests a new upload link and retries. |
| An upload fails on Windows | Make sure the agent runs curl.exe with --data-binary @file. |
See the catalogue-build API reference for every error code.
